چکیده

In the Mediterranean, green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) has exhibited increase in number of nests over past two decades. While Eastern Mediterranean is recognized as a high use area, scarce observations turtles Adriatic Sea suggested only low-level utilization this area. This study presents new findings and analyses importance region for species. combination with published records, we present 75 species including eight records. The records generally low but shows an intriguing ten-fold since 2000. may be result three confounding factors: (i) positive population trend at main nesting sites Mediterranean; (ii) increased institutional capacity research conservation decades, (iii) raising temperatures. Documented increases surface temperatures have established suitable recurring thermal corridors along Ionian-Adriatic developmental pathway provided environmental cues immigration juvenile into Adriatic. As abundance will likely future, efforts needed to avoid becoming sink habitat population.

Sun Compass Orientation by Juvenile Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas)

– Juvenile green turtles occupy home ranges on shallow reefs that parallel the southeastern coast of Florida. When disturbed, the turtles often flee eastward toward deeper water. We captured turtles at night and recorded their orientation during the next 2 days while they swam tethered inside a large circular outdoor pool and were exposed to the sun. The turtles from 2 reef sites were significa...

Metallothionein biosynthesis as a detoxification mechanism of heavy metals (Hg,Cd,Pb,Cu,Zn) in green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas)

In this study, heavy metals (Hg,Cd,Pb,Cu,Zn) and metallothionein (MT) biosynthesis were measured in blood of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting on the northern coast of the Sea of Oman. Heavy metals concentrations in the sea water, the sediments, the blood samples ranged between 0.02-8.43 μg/l, 0.06-10.32 μg/l, and 0.16-36.78μg/g (ww), respectively. The highest concentration...

Establishment of reference intervals for plasma protein electrophoresis in Indo-Pacific green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas

Biochemical and haematological parameters are increasingly used to diagnose disease in green sea turtles. Specific clinical pathology tools, such as plasma protein electrophoresis analysis, are now being used more frequently to improve our ability to diagnose disease in the live animal. Plasma protein reference intervals were calculated from 55 clinically healthy green sea turtles using pulsed ...

Migrations of Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) between Nesting and Foraging Grounds across the Coral Sea

Marine megafauna tend to migrate vast distances, often crossing national borders and pose a significant challenge to managers. This challenge is particularly acute in the Pacific, which contains numerous small island nations and thousands of kilometers of continental margins. The green sea turtle, Chelonia mydas, is one such megafauna that is endangered in Pacific waters due to the overexploita...

Molecular epidemiology and pathology of spirorchiid infection in green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas)

Spirorchiid blood fluke infections affect endangered turtle populations globally, and are reported as a common cause of mortality in Queensland green sea turtles. Both the flukes and their ova are pathogenic and can contribute to the stranding or death of their host. Of particular interest are ova-associated brain lesions, which have been associated with host neurological deficits. Accurate est...
